Dow Jones Sustainability Index ranks ANZ among top five banks globally. ANZ has achieved a score of 76% in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for 2006, placing it among the top five banks in the Index globally. ANZ's score of 76% for 2006 exceeds the industry average of 48% and significantly improves on ANZ's tenth position in 2005. The DJSI assesses a company's strategy, approach and performance across a wide range of non-financial measures. ANZ has participated in the DJSI since 2002 and has shown year-on-year.Improvement consistent with its aim of being a leader in corporate responsibility and in creating sustainable value for its stakeholders.
ANZ Chief Executive Officer John McFarlane said: "We're very pleased with our results, particularly given the tightening of assessment criteria for the Index this year." We achieved sector leading ratings for our risk and crisis management, codes of conduct, labour practices and occupational health and safety. We also scored highly on reporting, stakeholder engagement and human capital development. "While we have improved on a number of other criteria such as environmental reporting and supply chain standards, we have more work to do to turn policies and practices into better outcomes in these areas," Mr McFarlane said.
